Dr Kelleher addresses the Nuclear Inquiry of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on the Environment and Energy.
Speaking on behalf of the Law Council of Australia and as Deputy Chair of the Australian Environment & Planning Law Group, she responded to the Committee’s invitation to participate in a Roundtable Discussion.
The Committee is exploring pre-requisites for nuclear energy in Australia. Existing Australian legislation bans nuclear energy and many nuclear installations.
Members raised questions as to legal risks, potential liabilities nationally and internationally, the inability to insure against nuclear-related loss, and the appropriate form of any required regulatory framework.
The Law Council’s submission emphasised the need to ensure adoption of sustainable development principles before any legislative change.
